Introduction

Lower Dolpo Trek 18 Days: The Dolpo region, situated between the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri ranges, offers an unspoiled trekking experience with a unique blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. This remote area, closed to trekkers until 1989, now welcomes adventurers looking to explore its hidden gems. Our trekking journey begins with tours of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. We then fly to Nepalgunj and Juphal, where our trek into the Dolpo region starts. The trek was popularized by Peter Matthiessen’s book, The Snow Leopard, and the acclaimed movie, The Caravan. During our 18-day trek, we pass through traditional villages, meet fascinating people, and cross high Himalayan passes. The trek highlights the vast, tranquil beauty of Phoksundo Lake and the ancient Bon and Buddhist cultures of Dolpo. This journey into the wild west of Nepal is a truly unique and rewarding experience.

Physical Requirements

The Lower Dolpo Trek 18 Days is a difficult trek requiring hikers to walk 6-7 hours per day with a daypack, though some days may involve 8-9 hours of hiking. High-altitude trekking demands energy, experience, and acclimatization. We have two acclimatization days at Phoksundo Lake and Shey Gompa to help with altitude fitness. A positive attitude, self-confidence, and determination are essential for successfully completing this trek. Regular jogging a month before the trip is recommended to improve endurance and performance. Prior hiking experience and glacier hiking skills are advantageous. Consult your doctor before booking this trip and inform us of any pre-existing conditions.

Best Time to Travel

The best seasons for the Lower Dolpo Trek are summer, autumn, and spring. The optimal months are June to December and mid-February to May, offering fine and warm weather with perfect views, though nights can be chilly with freezing temperatures at higher altitudes. Winter treks are not recommended due to cold and heavy snowfall. Trekking in the summer season offers a unique experience with fewer crowds compared to spring and autumn.
